CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 7TH AND 8TH GRADE BANDS!!!!
For the first time in school history, Hagerstown sent the 7th and 8th Grade Bands as separate groups to the ISSMA Jr. High Organizational Contest. Both bands were approaching unchartered territory as they have traditionally performed as a combined group for their performances, both in concerts and contests.
The 7th Grade Band was the first to perform in the morning and they set the standard that everyone else was to follow. Performing Apollo March by John O'Reilly, Fields of Glory by Elliot del Borgo, and Atlantis by Anne McGinty, they performed the best program of their young lives. They wowed the crowd and the judges with an excellent display of musicianship. The judges continued to compliment the group on their dynamic contrast, their delicate playing in very exposed areas, and powerful climactic sections. They also earned high marks for tone quality and articulations. The judges also commented that they were obviously a well disciplined group. All three adjudicators awarded the band with First Divisions, becoming the first 7th Grade Band in Hagerstown history to be awarded with such an honor.
The 8th Grade Band entered the stage later in the morning and continued the level of performance that the 7th Grade had began. With only 30 playing members, they followed a group that outnumbered them almost 3-1. What they lacked in size, they made up with in heart and emotion. Performing three very distinct pieces, they set a wonderful mood with Ted Petersen's Empire State Salute, a very challenging cut-time march. Their second selection, A Childhood Hymn by David Holsinger, showcased their ability to play emotionally and in many exposed sections. Their final piece, William Himes' Creed, was just that, a creed; a wonderful display of highs and lows, driving rhythms, and a Presto ending. The group earned rousing comments from all three judges, including an open invitation from one judge to come join his band in Indianapolis. Refusing to let the opportunity pass them by, they earned a First Division as well, proving that the best is yet to come for both Jr. High Bands.
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERY MEMBER. Not only did you perform wonderfully as musicians, you represented the music department, Hagerstown Jr. High School, and the community as true ladies and gentlemen. To have so much to proud of!!!!
